Budgeting – How Can I Lower My Telephone Bill

It is a common question that comes from people from all different walks of life. You have heard yourself utter this question before. Here it is:

How Can I Lower My Telephone Bill?

lower your phone billNo one wants to pay any more money on their bill than they have to. You want to keep talking to family members and friends but boy oh boy the phone company is unrelenting when it comes to the fees they charge! Here we offer some relief for you in helping you to come up with some ways to bring your phone bill down (and keep it down!) instead of feeling helpless and watching it climbing higher and higher. Here are three ways to reduce your (eck!) telephone bill.

Lover of Long Distance

If many of the people in your life are not local and you make a fair amount of long distance calls then take a close look at the long distance plan you have with your provider. Is the rate you are getting as low as it could be? Is it possible that another company could offer you better rates? If you do not know the definitive answers to these questions then you need to investigate further.

In many cases it is the fees that will increase your monthly phone bill as opposed to the rate that you are being charged. For instance, your provider may offer you low rates on your long distance plan but then charge you monthly fees that are very high- too high.

If you are a person who makes long distance calls once in a while but not often then to save yourself some money you should look for a telephone company that may charge you a higher rate than your present one but also charges low fees or even better, no fees. You need to look closely at a variety of different companies before making the decision about which company has the most attractive long distance plan to offer you.

Bundle Up a Deal

One of the best ways to save money on your telephone bill is to not have it fly solo. Choose a plan that combines your local service with your long distance service and have it all delivered to you on the same bill. This is the ultimate in convenience and savings.

There are lots of plans out there that offer one form of another of bundled services so find out what your current company has to offer in this regard as well as what other providers have to offer and then go with the one that is most beneficial for your needs and can satisfy your pocketbook the most.  Search for a plan that will offer you unlimited local calls as well as unlimited local distance and any other features that may interest you, such as call waiting or caller ID.

Another type of bundled service worth considering is to choose a phone provider that offers bundles that include Internet service, cell phone service and in some cases, digital television. Figure out which services you want the most and then look for a bundled deal from the phone companies in your area.

Talk at Discounted Times

There are certain times of the day and night that are deemed as discount rate periods in the telephone world. These are the times when you want to be making long distance calls, especially if you plan to talk for more than a couple of minutes. Evenings, generally after five or six o’clock would be considered discount rate periods, as would late nights and weekend hours. Then there would also be holiday rates on statutory holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, etc.

The daytime hours are the most expensive time to talk. If you need to make local calls during the daytime that is one thing but save your long distance calling (if you can help it) for the nights and the discounted time periods. This will save you a ton of money on your bill!
